The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the major clinical departments of the UITH. The department provides comprehensive Eye patient care within UITH and at the community level.

The department also offers sight enhancement, research and training of Medical students, Nurses and Resident doctors in Ophthalmology, and contributes to the training of residents in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology ORL/Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) and Family Medicine from Ilorin and other training/ Medical centres across Nigeria.

The impressive compliment of personnel, availability of functional and relevant equipments, facilities, and quality of training earned the Department full accreditation with both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons in since year 2003.

A well-funded Ophthalmological revolving fund (ORF) has ensured adequate and timely provision of needed surgical and medical supplies and consumables for all the sub-specialties.

Patient Appointment

The appointment system for patient follow up is staggered between 7.30 am, 10a m and 12noon. This is to reduce the clogs in clinic, reduce patient waiting period and to improve patients’ satisfaction.

Large format posters and videos in Nigerian languages are displayed in conspicuous areas within and outside the clinic areas.
The department celebrates different sight related events such as World Sight Day, World Glaucoma Day to advocate for eye care, through organization of public lectures, screening for various eye disease in the community.

Training & Research

In addition to the clinic, ward and theatre sessions, training is also done through weekly tutorial, seminar, ground round and journal review.
A Wet lab where locally made appropriate technology developed within the department is used for training.
Consultants in the department regularly participate & facilitate various locally and internationally conferences and workshops.
The consultants serve as resource persons and examiners at the post graduate medical colleges.
