The Family Medicine Department of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital UITH commenced as a unit providing General Out-Patient care at the start of UITH in 1980. It was under different departments & Heads at different times until the appointment of Dr A.A. Giwa as its first consultant and Head of Department (HOD) in 1986.

Dr Fagbemi A. was the second HOD between 1990 -1995. The current HOD, Dr K.M. Alabi is the third Head since 1995, under whom the Department has witnessed tremendous improvement in terms of Trainings & Service delivery.

Residency training in General Medical Practice started in the Department in 1986 with the appointment of the 1st Consultant.  More than 20 Consultants/Fellows has been trained so far. The department staffs as at present are as follows, 7 Consultant Family Physicians (1 on leave of absence), 5 Senior Registrars, 16 Junior Registrars & 1 Supernumerary Resident. The name of the Department was changed to Family Medicine in 2008 to reflect its true status. The Department operated from the temporary site of the Hospital until 2008 when it moved to the department’s building at the permanent site. As the gate keeper to the Hospital, we see an average of about 350 patients per day. We admit acutely ill patients for a short time. We have a procedure room for minor operations.

We currently run 24 hour duty coverage including calls every day.  Our clinic includes Children, adolescent/Student & Adult clinics. We run NHIS clinic and Family & Executive care unit which cater for retainership & Family care. We also have specialized clinic being managed by our consultants. These include TB/DOTS, HAARTS/HIV, Well Adult, Skin and Pain & Palliative care Clinics.

We conduct Research, Train Residents & tutor Medical Students who attend our clinics. We aim at being the eagle eyed Gatekeeper that provide Comprehensive, Continuing, Coordinative and Patient-Satisfying services.
