Prof.A.W.O.Olatinwo IVF Director
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department is one of the pioneer departments of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The department, since inception, has been handling all gynaecological cases including treatment of infertility. However, the recognition of the fact that about 60% of these gynaecological cases are infertilityrelated prompted the Management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital under the visionary leadership of Prof. A.W.O. Olatinwo to dedicate a sub-specialty unit for research and world class health care services for the treatment of infertility. Hence, Assisted Reproduction Technology unit (aka IVF Centre) was commissioned to public use in January 2012, as at the time of this publication, the unit has over five hundred registered clients.
To accomplish this laudable mission, the Management embarked on capacity building for the identified interested members of UITH IVF team to be trained abroad at Apollo Hospital, India and many other IVF centres abroad. This include Dr. Lukman O. Omokanye, Consultant Gynaecologist who was trained in Minimal Access Surgery (MAS) and Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART), Dr. Sikiru A. Biliaminu, Consultant Chemical Pathologist whose training focused on Embryology, MrFataiIshola trained as Embryology Technician, while C.N.O. F.A. Sidi and ACNO F.I.Shehu were in trained ART and Laparoscopy nursing.
At the arrival of Team IVF from their training abroad, the Management provided a moderate office accommodation facility forthe unit to kick-start the IVF programme. The rapid success of the team within considerable little time of operation encouraged the management to construct a state of the art ultramodern office accommodation, the first of its kind in the country which was handed over to the unit in June 2015 and officially commissioned on 14th September, 2015.
